Seed Crop Isolation Distance System
Seed Crop Isolation Distance System (SCID)
Regulations (138KB PDF)
Minimising Cross-Pollination and Maximising Land Utilisation
The SCID system was developed to maximise high value cruciferous and vegetable seed crop production by minimising the cross pollination risk when flowering.
The system is a web based program to allow for seed crop site placements that provides a warning to users of potential crop isolation conflicts. The system features a menu window that displays and records information on seed crops entered on the system, and has a GIS mapping system to select or mark crop sites.
It is a voluntary system that provides another tool to minimise the potential of a crop loss through cross pollination. It does not replace the vital role of neighbours discussing potential production sites with each other before planting commences.
The system operates through an AsureQuality web site. AsureQuality is a state owned enterprise (SOE) specialising in certification and inspection services.
The system has been built as a database that manages crop site information from one year to the next. The system allows for users to be registered as either merchants or growers.
Merchants are able to digitise a crop site onto the system and enter information about the species, expected harvest season, isolation distance and sowing season. The system will automatically check for other cross pollinating crops that have been entered onto the system when a new crop site is entered.
If an isolation conflict is triggered, the system alerts the merchant triggering the conflict. If the merchant proceeds with the booking, the other merchant(s) whose crops will be affected by the triggering crop are automatically alerted through an Email notification.
Growers are able to view crop sites on their own property and are automatically notified of crop placements by merchants.
The species currently set up in the system are listed in the table below:
| Brassica | Species |
| Campestris | Chinese Cabbage, Pak Choi, Choi Sum, Rape (Canola / Oil Seed Rape), Turnip Rape, Mustard, Turnip, Swede |
| Oleracea | Cabbage, Cauliflower, Brocolli, Brusselsprout, Chinese Kale, Forage Kale, Kohl rabi |
| Raphanus sativius | Radish |
| Juncea | Brown Mustard |
| Nigra | Black Mustard |
| Other Families | |
| Beet | Red Beet, Silver Beet, Sugar Beet |
| Sinapis alba | White Mustard |
| Carrots, Celery, Lettuce, Onion, Parsley, Spinach | |
| Chrysanthemum |
Merchants and Growers of Brassica and Vegetable seed crops are strongly urged to use the system.
The AsureQuality Seed Certification Bureau administer the system on behalf of the seed industry.
